Phonics and Decoding

Grades K-2

Students in grade K-2 will focus on phonics and decoding

Phonics is the instructional approach that supports students in their application of the alphabetic principle that letters and sounds work together systematically to form words. The main objective in teaching phonics instruction is to teach decoding and encoding skills. When students apply their knowledge of phonics it will improve their ability to blend or combine sounds, which is used for reading words, and breaking apart sounds. This strategy is used for spelling words.

Young Scholars’ Academy uses the University of Florida Literacy Intitute’s Foundation’s (UFLI) program. UFLI is researched and evidence based reading instruction that has been proven effective for all readers.

These are Young Scholars’ Academy LLC Instructional Phonics and Decoding Goals

  • Systematic: the letter-sound relationship is taught in an organized and logical sequence using UFLI Foundations phonics program

  • Explicit: the instruction of UFLI provides students with precise directions for learning letter-sound relationships

  • Frequent Opportunities: the instruction of UFLI provides students to apply what they are learning about letters and sounds to the reading of words, sentences, and stories

  • Significantly Improves: the instruction of UFLI improves children's word recognition, spelling, and reading comprehension

  • Most Effective: when phonic's instruction begins in kindergarten or first grade it is most effective, but should be used as part of a comprehensive reading program

Fluency/Comprehension

Grades 1-6

Structured Literacy Approach- explicit and direct, systematic and sequential, cumulative, multi-sensory, diagnostic, progress monitored.

Young Scholars’ Academy LLC uses an evidence-based diagnostic assessment called Diagnostic Reading Assessment (DRA) for fluency and comprehension as well as the Comprehensive Assessment of Reading Strategies (CARS) to collect information on your student’s level of mastery for each of the 8 reading strategies.

These strategies include:

  • Finding Main Idea

  • Recalling Facts and Details

  • Understanding Sequence

  • Recognizing Cause and Effect

  • Making Predictions

  • Finding Word Meaning in Context

  • Drawing Conclusions and Making Inferences

  • Reading Pictures

A Pretest and Post Test are designed and administered to assess mastery and focus on each reading strategy in a variety of genres. The student will complete a self-assessment and a research report will be shared with the parent. Benchmark assessments will be administered to determine skill progression and to progress-monitor a student’s application of multiple reading strategies.

The diagnostic CARS tool will determine areas where an individual student is successful and needs improvements. These results will allow me to provide personalized instruction.

The Strategies to Achieve Reading Success(STARS) align to National Standards of Learning for English Language Arts. Your student will develop reading comprehension that is essential to building a foundation for the rigorous standards.

Each lesson provides instructions and practice in the targeted reading strategy. Each lesson is scaffolded, providing a gradual release of support. Each lesson  is modeled, then guided, then moves to independent practice.

Enrichment/

Interdiciplinary Learning

Grades K-6

Ignite your child's love for reading with our enrichment reading sessions at Young Scholars' Acadamy. We will guide students to explore, research, and discover new things through a interdiciplinary approach, helping them notice key themes and the author's purpose. With a focus on classic literature, poetry, and informational texts, these sessions will enrich your child's interdiciplinary experience and foster a lifelong love for learning.

Interdiciplinary learning is an effective way to empower students to design, develop, and construct hands-on solutions. When a studentt is immersed using real-life skills, students can build their creative capacity and develop knowledge, literacy, numeracy, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. This educational approach provides valuable opportunities for students to learn and grow.
